When it comes to handling and transporting diesel particulate filters [DPFs], certain precautions must be taken to preserve the filters’ condition as well as the legal requirements. Modern diesel engines require DPFs because these important components restrict and retain soot in order to reduce emissions. However, if not handled and carried properly, these filters are fragile and can easily become damaged.

1. Understand how fragile DPFs are

The diesel particulate filters are fragile, and handling them needs some utmost care. They are made up of fragile materials such as silicon carbide and cordierite. A small impact on the filter or exposure to a hard physical surface may cause cracks or damage. Always handle DPFs with care to prevent them from falling or experiencing harsh knocks. Ensure that an adequate material protects the DPF, absorbing shocks and preventing the part from shifting.

2. Ensure proper packaging

Proper packaging is necessary to protect DPFs during transportation. Consider the following:

Cushioning material: To prevent the DPF from shifting during the shipping process, the best thing to do is to use foam inserts, bubble wrap, or any other cushioning material that will snugly fit into the DPF.
Rigid containers: To prevent external influences on the cushioned DPF, it is necessary to place it in a strong, rigid vessel.
Labeling: To caution anyone who will be handling the product that it is fragile, label it as “fragile” and provide handling instructions.

3. Ensure compliance with hazardous material regulations

Despite not being a hazardous material per se, the DPFs may contain ash, diesel soot, or other regulated objects. Ensure that you have properly washed the used DPF and that the equipment is free of any toxic substances before transporting it. For some strategies to remove diesel particulates, decontamination may be required. In this context, the jurisdiction and its state may expect you to provide evidence that the DPF is safe for transportation.

4. Consider temperature and other environmental conditions.

Environmental conditions may have an impact on the condition of DPFs during transportation. The use of extremely high or low temperatures on DPFs may cause the weakening of the structure of the filters. If the above conditions are necessary, make sure to transport and/or store them in a cool place. In other cases, the filter may corrode or experience some other form of damage due to moisture. If shipping through or to areas with a high level of humidity, use moisture-proof packaging and consider using moisture-absorbing materials as well.

5. Ensure secure transportation.

Make sure to securely anchor DPFs during transportation to prevent any potential harm. Make sure to properly secure the DPF when transporting it by truck, plane, or sea transport to minimize movement and excessive vibration. Even if strong, resistant vessels and containers are protecting the DPFs, avoid placing heavy loads on them. If the weight is stressed, it could damage the internal filter.
